Buying into the World: The Overpopulation Myth

A concerned church member recently brought up overpopulation as being one of the more serious problems facing humanity today.  They felt it was certainly another reason why Jesus Christ needs to return to earth imminently.

Needless to say, I was taken aback.  Afterall, I don’t know about you, but I seem to remember the God we worship telling Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.” (Gen 1:28).  So I asked them one question. Just one: “When God told Adam and Eve to ‘Be fruitful and multiply’ did He say: ‘Multiply until you hit 10 million or 2 billion or 5 billion and then stop?’”

The individual slowly shook their head and sheepishly answered, “Ummm…no…”

What exactly did God say in His Word about population growth?

So what exactly did God say in His Word about population growth?  In addition to His mandate to Adam and Eve, God blessed Noah and his sons after the great flood and told them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” (Gen 9:1). To Abraham: “And multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore” (Gen 22:17).  To Jacob: “Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south” (Gen 28:14).  To Hagar on behalf of Ishmael: “Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly” (Gen 17:20).

As the dust of the earth, the sand on the seashore, the stars of heaven. Fruitfulness. Fruit of the womb. Filling the whole earth.  A blessing.  These are the metaphors that proliferate in the Bible referencing population. From Genesis to Psalms to the Prophets. The blessing of the little children in the Gospels to the end of the book.  What we see is that God expected humanity to spread across the earth.  He viewed and continues to view having children and many, many descendants as a blessing. Not a curse.

Nowhere did God set limits on humanity’s expansion in numbers.  Nor was He concerned that if there were too many descendants of Adam and Eve, and later Noah, that the earth would be destroyed simply by their overabundant presence. And He is afterall, the Creator and the One who keeps the earth running behind the scenes. He would know.

Modern overpopulation concerns don’t come from the Bible.

Clearly then, modern overpopulation concerns and policies are not sanctioned by God’s Word.  They do, however, spring from variations on the theory of evolution – including Social Darwinism.  Such theories see man as nothing more than another animal. A species to be managed.  There are even those today who declare that humans are the worst creatures in the animal kingdom.  If not a plague – a virus – to be completely eradicated from the face of the earth. Yes, they do go that far.  Implausible?

Remember that evolutionists and proponents of overpopulation hysteria believe that man is not a created being. Certainly not created with a purpose beyond the physical realm, nor in the image of a God whom they believe does not exist. Man, therefore, could not possibly have a spirit that gives him the ability to think, reason, plan, design and create. That makes him “not an animal.”

So they blame the world’s current and predicted future ills on longer human lifespans and families having too many children.  Fervently insisting that if the human population is not reigned in, the earth will be ruined beyond repair.  With climate, environment and natural resources apparently destroyed to the point of impairing the quality of life for all earth’s creatures. This has become accepted “science,” and an entire belief system.

As a result, we see scientists, environmentalists, world leaders, ideologues, climate change promoters, and young people from school-age children to university students, all shouting for “population to be brought in line with sustainable resources.”  They claim this will help protect all people, species, and the planet for the future.

Social Darwinism at play

But what this really is, is Social Darwinism at play along with its ideological children and cheerleaders.  Among them, science-worshippers and eugenicists.  Enabled by the ignorant, the power hungry and the morally bereft.  You may have heard them – including some very famous people – either directly champion depopulation or refer to population control measures in speeches, videos, books and articles. Throughout the past century to last week.

The evils of China’s one-child policy, WWII’s Holocaust, the Tuskegee experiment and coerced sterilizations from the early 1900s onwards are their work. So are other genocides, and many military and medical experiments. I’ll leave it to you do the research. But it’s out there and lots of it.

These very same ideologies are also currently driving have-no-or-less-children campaigns, mass abortions, infanticide, “beneficent” euthanasia, and human medical experiments – including the worldwide Covid vaccine experiment.  They further inspire the soulless corporations that profit from them to continue with “new and improved” products, propaganda and policies. Claiming that humanity is merely a random evolutionary mutation justifies management and manipulation by any means necessary including experimentation and culling.

Christians must be careful what views they espouse

People of God, followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, these ideas are plainly Satanic, anti-God and anti-His creation.  They are abhorrent in His sight and we are not to be involved.  Yet many Christians are accepting these views on a variety of levels.  From trying to justify them to openly applauding, espousing and teaching them.

Think for a moment. Is the earth really full? What about all the deserts and mountain areas, oceans and vast tracts of uninhabited land?  Could not enough housing be found, enough food grown, enough resources reasonably obtained and managed?

The overpopulation concept is a myth with sinister roots and branches.  And It is being used to manipulate, control, destroy and kill God’s creation.  As Christians we must be careful not to get caught up in it.  Study scripture and stay true to God.

Man is neither an animal nor a plague. We are created in God’s own image. (Gen 1:26).

“But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.” (Job 32:8)

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!” (Psalm 125:3-5)
